Doctors,Nurse & Healthcare Program Overview

In this program, volunteers with medical and healthcare skills will use and increase those skills by providing care for disadvantaged Ghanaians at local community hospitals. Volunteers will experience conditions not normally found in Europe and North America. Disease such as malaria and typhoid are seen on an almost daily basis.

As a medical student or a nurse, your willingness to serve as an aid worker in locations lacking healthcare personnel can make a tremendous difference in the lives of others. Volunteer opportunities allow you to spend time in a variety of different departments within a hospital:

• Accident and emergency
• pediatrics
• maternity
• pharmacy
• physiotherapy
• surgery

Many of Ghana’s healthcare personnel have moved to developed countries, leaving a gap between supply and demand in medical services. Medical student volunteer healthcare programs bring badly needed services and knowledge to hospitals and clinics in Ghana. Too often, people die of illness and diseases that are easily preventable with even simple medical care. Your volunteer time will help bridge this gap.

There will be oppertunity for you to learn from Ghana also.  In many of the places that you may work at in Ghana there are not numerous diognostic machines like you are used to in the west.  You will learn how to get back to the basics and practice medicine without all of the expensive machines.  And potentially even more important for the direction of where healthcare is going in the west you will learn how to do more with less.

A Day in the Life

Medical outreach project duties may include providing health education, taking patient histories, consulting, or providing patient treatment.

Hospital and clinic placement duties include observation and help in the OPD, consultation room, or with laboratory assistance.

Healthcare experience as a medical or nursing student, nurse, or doctor.

What this includes:

The $150 charged by Green Bug Adventures is only a down payment and booking fee.  The rest of the funds will need to be paid in cash when you arrive in Ghana for your volunteer placement with our partner who operates the trip.  To learn more about our partner click here.  The cost of the program not including the booking fees are below.

Volunteer Programs 2-4 weeks- $650

For each additional week after 4 weeks- $150

This pays for:

• Airport Pick Up: Upon arrival, our in-country coordinator and a staff member will be at the airport to pick you up. Please remember to send your flight information to us prior to travelling.
• First Night Bed and Breakfast: If your flight comes in later than 11:30 pm, you will spend the first night in Accra, the capital city of Ghana.
• A Gift from Our Partner: Volunteers will receive a souvenir upon arrival and departure.
• Transportation to Placement: You will be travelling with our in-country coordinator or a staff member by car, cab, tro-tro (mini-van) or bus to your destination. Our partner is responsible for one-way transportation to the project and volunteers are responsible for their personal and return travel. Costs required for travel to and from the host accommodations to the place of work are the responsibility of the volunteer.
• Accommodation: Volunteers will stay with a host family, within a rented house, or at a hostel. Volunteers will stay either in a single or shared room. Host families are carefully screened and selected based on our requirements. All families are middle-class and live in safe neighborhoods. Distances from accommodations to projects vary. Host families will typically provide three meals per day. Vegetarian diets or food allergies will be taken into account when placement is arranged.
• 24/7 In-country Support and Supervision: Field offices and staff members are everywhere at our project sites and our in-country coordinator will also be available for help when needed, including a 24-hour support team. We are committed to making sure all participating communities and volunteers benefit from the collaboration.
• Safety: Volunteer safety is a priority at Green Bug Adventures. We ensure our trips are safe and our in-country coordinator will provide whatever support you may need at any step along the way.
• Administrative Costs: Our partners staff work every day to care for you the volunteers: Emails are answered; phone calls are taken; coordination occurs between projects; and most importantly, volunteers are placed within areas of their interest in villages. Although most of our staff work on a volunteer basis, there are always costs to any organization. We try hard to keep these administration costs to a minimum so that your money can be used most effectively.
